Rural North Indian Women Artists: From Wall Painters to Fine Artists

In the rural region of Mithila, near the border between India and Nepal, women have painted ephemeral designs for wedding celebrations for generations. This talk will show how their paintings have changed as their artwork was transferred to paper and then appreciated as fine art.
Paula Richman holds the Danforth Professorship of South Asian Religions, Emerita, at Oberlin College. She has published widely on Indian religions, including Many Ramayanas: The Diversity of a South Asian Narrative Tradition
