Come to the Wellfleet OysterFest to learn about the role that oysters have played in Wellfleet’s economic history. In the early 1900’s, Wellfleet was the highest producer of oysters in New England. During that same time the Sealshipt Company utilized a state-of-the-art processing facility, and national marketing prowess, to ship freshly shucked oysters by railroad throughout the United States and Canada. Wellfleet Historical Society board president Dwight Estey will describe how Wellfleet’s oyster industry began and why Wellfleet is still recognized as an industry leader in producing quality oysters. Joining Dwight Estey for question and answers are Wellfleet Historical Society volunteer archivist Dave Drabkin and David Wright, author of The Famous Beds of Wellfleet.
